Grant Hayter-Menzies is an author of several books and is about to write one about Elephant Nature Park and Lek, the founder of the park. I’m rapt about this because both the Park and Lek are well worth reading about! Here is a piece he wrote about a childhood experience that haunts him to this day. Be warned – you will probably cry. I did.

Little humans with buckets swarming at the Drive In Ele Wash. Elephant Nature Park, Chiang Mai, North Thailand.
I recently watched a documentary about the exotic pet trade. It opened my eyes to the unthinkable horrors these animals go through.

There is no justification for anyone to “own” a wild animal.

We don’t ‘own’ any animal. We are just privileged enough to have a relationship with some of them – hopefully on their terms. Thanks for the post twoscamps.

You would never guess it. The pet industry is alive And strong. Designer dogs and cats…. I have yet to have to meet any pet that is able to exist on its own terms. It’s all about what’s convenient for the human.

My guess is a lot of that is due to the media and the movie industry. Time after time, you see characters in films hanging onto a designer animal or toting one around in a handbag. Last time I was in Chiang Mai I saw a wee dog in a baby front pack. Pressed against it’s ‘owner’s’ body, in 30-something degree heat. Unbelievable!!
